The inkling of realization that he was close to civilization made him a little—more like very—giddy. He hadn’t been outside for who knows how long and he was itching to integrate himself back into the world, despite it being large and unfamiliar. He should fear the unknown, but at present, he wasn’t afraid, merely eager. He wasn’t going to waste this window of opportunity. At the sound of a vehicle approaching, Jaime resisted the urge to bolt. He maintained his pace as best as he could, as well as his heartbeat. The one regret he held now was that he hadn’t disguised himself yet. Even if done properly, he still had a distinct look. He eventually stopped and looked at the woman in the truck. His gut always told him to respect his elders. The uncertainty in her voice was evident, but he couldn’t tell it was contrived. It seemed she was implying he hitch a ride. He would ultimately have to rely on the kindness of strangers to survive and not be found by Divina. Still, he preferred not to be in anything enclosed yet. Nightfall had come rather quickly. Instead of scaring him, it actually sent a wave of relief through him. It would provide the cover he desperately needed. Back to the woman, he had to figure out a way to reassure her. “I’m—“ he cut himself off, having nearly divulging the fact that he wasn’t alone. Saying he had company was usually the tactic one would use to drive other people away, but for some reason, Jaime didn’t want to mention them. If they were here and ended up with taking this woman’s offer, he wouldn’t have anyone else. It was for all of their safety that he didn’t tell anyone about them. “I’m doing some training program, just adjusted to the wilderness and heading to the next stop. I can handle it, but thank you for your concern.” As he picked up on what sounded like howls, he couldn’t help but shudder. He was torn between turning back and heading on, choosing the latter. The three of them were strong and he didn’t want to make himself any more suspicious than he already was. | |
